Bill Cosby once said, “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.” Can I get an AMEN? You can not spend your life trying to please everyone who has an opinion… which is everybody.

You must figure out what is important and go after it! Andy Stanley wrote a book called Choosing to Cheat where he talks about having to make a conscious choice on who or what in life gets “cheated”. There are only so many hours in a day, only so much mental and physical energy to spend, and a decision must be made as to where that energy goes. So, In a sense, something is going to get cheated. Example from the book: work/ life balance. If you spend a ton of time at work, then the time you spend with your family will suffer, however, if you spend all your time with your family, no work is getting done.

I believe we, as a society, fall into a trap of trying not to choose. We try to do everything! So we end up running around, trying to get everything done, and in all reality we cheat everything!

That’s what happened to me. I’m a doer. If something needs doing,  just do it right? Well not so fast. One of the best business books around is a book by Jim Collins called Good To Great. He says that good is the enemy of great. How true! And it’s impossible to be great at something is you’re trying to be good at everything. It’s kind of like in marketing: If everyone is your customer, then no one is your customer. Without focusing on what you’re trying to accomplish, you’re spread too thin.

So What are you trying to accomplish? What is your main goal in each area of your life? It helps to write this stuff down. Physically put pen to paper and get specific.

If you’re comfortable sharing, post some thoughts or goals in the comments.

As always, keep making progress,

Cameron
